Why Should I Get Breakdown Cover?

Running a car is an expensive business. If you’ve ever thought that skimping on breakdown cover is the right decision, you’re not alone. It can be the first thing that goes when a car owner decides to economise.

Thousands of people who are not covered, break down on the roadside each year and then have to fork out the cost and trouble of getting their car to the garage for repairs which can be an expensive business.

What is Breakdown Cover?

Breakdown cover is provided by companies such as the AA and RAC, most notably, and provide you with a variety of different levels of cover for a monthly or annual fee. If you breakdown, the company will come out to you and get your car going again.

If they can’t get it fixed or started, they’ll tow you to the nearest garage or your home, whichever you prefer. Like ordinary insurance, you can define the level of your breakdown service.

What Does it Cover You For?

  • You can, for instance, decide to cover you as a person or a particular car. If you have personal cover, it doesn’t matter which vehicle you are driving.
  • You might not want cover for your vehicle outside your house (for example, if you can’t get your car started in the morning) and simply need cover when you are a certain distance from home. This latter insurance is usually cheaper.
  • You are normally covered for the mechanic to come out and repair your car but not for any parts, for example, a starter coil or battery, that need to be replaced.
  • You can opt for onward travel insurance that means the company will find a way for you to continue your journey, for example, delivering a hire car.

Breakdown cover today can be tailored to your individual needs. The big benefit of this type of cover is that you won’t get any nasty surprises. You are never going to be sure when or where you may break down and it pays to have yourself protected.

You may also wish to look into getting breakdown cover sorted on behalf of family members such as if your children use the car regularly and also if you have elderly relatives that still drive and would be more vulnerable in a breakdown situation.

Breakdown Cover Has Come Down in Price

The cost of breakdown cover has come down significantly in recent years, on average. This is mainly due to competition between more providers but also because breakdown cover is currently offered cheaply with many car insurance products. Some now provide basic cover for as a little as a few pounds a month.

With such a low cost, it makes sense to have this kind of cover. Yes, you may never need it, especially if you have relatively new car but you never know when it could happen to you and we feel it is always better to be safe than sorry.
