It’s important to note that an MOT is a minimum standard safety check, the tester must not remove any parts of the vehicle to inspect an area E.G engine covers or wheel trims. The tester must also not carry out any work to the vehicle whilst its under test, even if it’s as simple as topping up washer fluid, so it’s worth carrying out a few basic checks before presenting it for MOT.
Here are just a few
Not all your lights have to work for the MOT, it depends on the year of your vehicle as to what must be checked. But for most cars, the sidelights, dipped beam, main beam must work, the brake lights, rear fog light, indicators, and hazards all must work without adversely affecting each other.
Your seat belt must retract, and it must clip into the buckle and not release until the release button is pushed. The buckle should operate under tension and must not be damaged. If there is a child seat fitted you will have an advisory notifying you of this, that’s because we must not remove the child seat, therefore, cannot fully inspect the entire of the seatbelt. There must not be any SRS/Airbag lights illuminated on the dash as this is also a failure.
Depending on the year of your vehicle depends on how many mirrors you must have to pass the MOT. If it’s manufactured before 2010 it needs the drivers mirror plus one other (either a passenger side or rear view) but does not need both. If your vehicle was manufactured after 2010 you must have one passenger side mirror, one drivers side mirror and one internal (unless it doesn’t give a view to the rear E.G vans or vehicles with no rear window).
This includes items such as wiper blades and washers. If you have run out of washer fluid your vehicle will fail. Your wiper blades must clear the screen without smearing or streaking. You must not have any damage to the windscreen that seriously affects the drivers view of the road.
There isn’t an awful lot you can do to check your emissions, if you drive a diesel engine vehicle it is advisable to take the vehicle for a run to try and get the vehicle to perform a regeneration before bringing it to us. This is especially advisable to those that do very short journeys often.
One of the easiest items to check on your vehicle! Your tyres must have a minimum tread depth above 1.6mm, across the central three quarters of the tyre. It must not have any cords exposed or cuts that expose cords, bulges anywhere in the tyre and they must be the same size across the same axle.
They must meet the minimum efficiency requirements which we test in our automated brake roller system. the brakes do have minimum measurement requirements that they must meet, and they must be balanced with each other – if they’re not, it could cause you to veer into traffic whilst braking!
There must be no excessive play anywhere in your steering system. if your vehicle is fitted with power steering, it must work. All components need to be in an acceptable condition and correspond with the correct system fitted on the vehicle.
All your electrical wiring must be in good condition, not deteriorated and not in a position to cause a short circuit or come in to contact with any rotating/ moving parts!
Your exhaust must be secure, within a certain noise level (although this isn’t measured in Decibels for the MOT) and not have any major leaks and there must not be any fumes entering the cabin!
There are a lot of checks we carry out on a vehicle’s suspension, and there are many different layouts and types of suspension. We check for worn bushes, excessive play in any ball joints and we check to make sure all rubber gaiters are intact and preventing the ingress of dirt!
Always remember, an MOT is not a service. An MOT is a technical inspection for safety, it will not repair or replace worn vehicle components. Your car will require an MOT (subject to age) on an annual basis. Book your MOT online today for just £39.95.
