Essential regular checks to make on your car

Car maintenance can be a chore and a bore for those of us that just have a car to go from A to B and can never seem to find the time. But it could save your life… Our cars have a lot of working parts that need TLC every now and again and the quickest, easiest and cheapest way to do this is to make regular checks at home which can prevent internal damage to your engine but also help avoid break downs or dangerous faults whilst you are driving.

We have made a handy list of all of the things that you should be checking regularly as a guide, and have also outlined the details of our 10 Point Winter Check which we are currently offering for free at Queens Park Garage, covering all of the things that need to be checked a couple of times a year by a mechanic to give your vehicle the best chance at a long and happy life.

Things to regularly check on your vehicle, at least once a month and before you take a long journey:

Tyres – make sure they are not damaged with bulges, sharp objects etc, and that the tyre pressure and tread are all correct. See our previous blog for how to do this… (link to blog)

Oil level – Ensure that your engine is sufficiently lubricated in order to prevent future engine damage. See our previous blog for how to do this… (link to blog)

Lights – make sure that you regularly check that all of your lights are working by turning them on one at a time and walking around your car, you may wish to ask a friend to help you.

Washer fluid – The most annoying thing, which can also be quite dangerous, is when you are driving along in wet conditions and you run out of washer fluid. You should keep a bottle in the boot of your car in case it needs topping up so you can keep your windscreen clean and clear.

Things that we can check for you that should be done every 6 months:

  • Antifreeze coolant strength & level
  • Wiper & washers check
  • Heating & ventilation performance
  • Breaks check (pads, discs, shoes, drums)
  • Exhaust condition

We will check these during your annual service but you can also book an interim service or take advantage of our free 10 Point Winter Check which also covers all the items listed.

If you are sat there thinking, ‘Oh dear, I really need to do all those things…’ then don’t panic, as we are offering to check all of these things for free to ensure that you can continue being safe on the road. Give us a call if you need any help, advice or would like to book in your free 10 Point Winter Check.
